The Peterborough Lakers' top two picks in Sunday's Major Series Lacrosse draft may never play in Peterborough.
After protecting local junior grads Brock Sorensen, who played in Orangeville last season, and Mark Farthing, from the junior A Lakers, the senior Lakers selected St. Catharines' Cory Fowler 10th overall and Whitby's Matt Cockerton 17th. They used their final two selections to take Peterborough natives Ryan Masters, a goalie who finished last season with the Brampton junior A Excelsiors, and Blake Evans from the junior C Lakers.Lakers' coach/GM Jamie Batley said Fowler and Cockerton are promising young offensive players, but it's unlikely they could crack the club's lineup next season. The majority of the 2010 Mann Cup championship team is expected back this year.
"I've talked to some other teams who are interested in both these players," Batley told The Peterborough Examiner. "We're working out a deal that could possibly trade both these players."
The Lakers got some bad news Sunday. Batley said Toronto Rock officials informed him Ryan Sharp suffered torn ACL and MCL knee ligaments in an NLL game Saturday.
"Everyone heals differently, but I'm guessing there is a chance he won't be able to play this summer," Batley said .
